Abstract: In the school curriculum the study of Chekhov’s creativity follows the study of L.N. Tolstoy. After Tolstoy's monologue, detailed characteristics given to the world, historical circumstances, character, emphasized attention to the internal state of the characters, “psychology of the soul”, Chekhov’s artistic world seems unusually simple to students. The main task of the teacher is to show the depth of meaning in Chekhov's works, achieved by the author through a wealth of subtext. The originality of Chekhov's poetics is most evidently revealed through the identification of the function of the artistic detail in his texts.
