Abstract: In this article the problem of reading in contemporary Russian society in the context of socio-cultural situation of the 2000s is examined. The author researches such problems as status of book, functions of reading, types of readers, range of reading, existence of new forms of literature, the relationship of contemporary "serious" and "mass" literature. As the material there were used the results of opinion poll of ordinary readers (including schoolchildren and students) and opinions of the writers themselves and literary critics.
