Abstract: O.A. Akimova's research is devoted to the semantics of the word portfolio in modern Russian. A wide variety of meanings and function opportunities of the word and the phenomenon itself in education sphere are considered. The contributor distinguishes between several types of students' portfolio and ways of assessing it and points out the opportunity of developing a teacher's portfolio subject to competence approach.
