Abstract: The author of the article considers the genesis of socialist realism method, its role and specific ways of functioning in the Soviet XXth century culture. Special attention is paid to the development of theoretical background of socialist realism in 1932-1933 (for instance, by A. Lunatcharsky), creating exemplary texts, the first of which is probably the joint work The Belomor-Baltic Canal and the rise of works that made up classics of this trend. The contributor speculates about the influence of the Soviet literary life principles on the creative psychology of artists, standardized thinking, censure as well as self-censure and the related effect of double mind. The article defines literary standard and the system of genre varieties in socialist-realist novel. The conclusion is that socialist-realist big style is to a greater extent connected with the political (ideological) content of the text rather than with the particular level of the literary form.
