Abstract: Ivan Bunin’s short story “Chalice of Life” holds an intermediate position between Bunin’s short novels (“The Village”, “Dry Valley”) and short stories (tales of the Maritime Alps, “Dark Avenues” and others). The entanglement of “Chalice of Life” and the disposition of characters imply an epic plot which is not developed and is replaced with a lyrical dimension.
