Abstract: The article is devoted to the fate of the novel in Russian literature of the 80-ies of the XIX century. Considered various points of view on the problem of «crisis» («disappearance») of the novel in the literature of this time, the reasons for the loss of the genre to the priority position which he occupied in the literature of the previous decade. Based on the understanding of the «epic nature» of the novel, proposed N. L. Leiderman, who is in his ability to construct «the image of the universal connection of phenomena», the author of the article comes to the conclusion that the genre of «retreated» in times of crisis development of society, in a situation of «fault eras». And then, «changing» in accordance with the new aesthetic demands of the times, again asserted its leading position in the system of genres of Russian literature.
