OLYMPIAD IN INTENSIVE READING AS A RESOURCE OF FUNCTIONAL LITERACY FORMATION

Abstract: The article is devoted to the urgent problem of formation of the readers’ literacy. It becomes more socially and personally significant in an information society. Modern school is in constant search of ways to form functional literacy and assess the quality of reading. The authors present their experience of the city Olympiad in intensive reading which is held online in the form of a test. The Olympiad employs texts of different types most frequently used in everyday life: text of the official-business style, journalistic article, text with drawings, schemes, tables, diagrams, infographics, as well as fiction text. The Olympiad test materials are based on the types of texts and assignments used in international measurements and PISA reader literacy studies. The article provides examples of search, analytical, interpretation, and positional tasks and assignments focused on screening, «gripe», literal interpretation, generalization of information, information search, selective reading, extraction of major topics and formulation of conclusions, etc. Olympiad tasks allow evaluating reading skills including search, selection, interpretation, integration and assessment of information, readiness to understand, interpret and comprehend texts, and can be used in school practice.
