Abstract: The article offers an overview of the modern Hungarian reception of I. S. Turgenev’s novel “Fathers and Sons”. Common points and differences in the interpretation of the text by contemporary scholars are revealed. The correlation of the studies is based on the same main questions that have always caused heated debates in Turgenev studies, namely, the significance of Bazarov’s death, the mystery of the character of the cold but feminine Odintsova, and her role in the tragic end of the protagonist. Interpretations of these figures in the articles under consideration by Hungarian researchers proceed from a negative assessment of the character and the tragic fate of the strong new person. This situation is covered from different positions and with the help of different methods, in particular, the study of philosophical problems and the ideological layer of the novel, as well as the motif-centered analysis of nihilism, the discovery of a number of metaphors (anatomiya, kusat’sya), which equally relate to the conceptual spheres of medicine and love. As a result, these well-known topics receive original interpretations. The author of the article also conducts original analysis of these aspects, studying the unfolding of the above mentioned metaphors both in the plot and in the semantics of the text. It is concluded that in modern foreign Russian studies, the novel “Fathers and Sons” remains in the focus of attention, and the scholarly emphasis is shifting to the field of poetology.
