Рубрика: MODERN READING OF THE CLASSICS
Article: PDF
Abstract: The cross-cutting plot of the lapse from virtue in the works of E. P. Rostopchina has not been subject of analysis until now. Meanwhile, the study of images and allusions associated with biblical symbolism in the works of the writer makes it possible to clarify the ideas about the formation of the individual artistic image of the world of Rostopchina and to describe the mechanism of creation of the author's myth. Drawing on the ideas about mythopoetics set forth in the works of the Russian literary critics (A. F. Losev, V. N. Toporov, Yu. M. Lotman, E. M. Meletinsky), the author of the article explores the process of myth-making by Rostopchina. The specific features of the artistic interpretation of the biblical myth of the lapse from virtue correlate with the creative evolution of the writer: the emergence of the paradise topos in the early Moscow period; the use of the images of Adam, Eve and the Serpent in the Anninsky period; the formation of the motif structure on which the myth is based in the St. Petersburg period; the transformation of the individual author’s myth into a complete plot in the late Moscow period. The article notes that the formation of the myth of the laps from virtue in the work of Rostopchina was quite natural; it was a result of the factors, both inner or individual – the history of relations with A. N. Karamzin, and external or literary – interest in the same biblical allusions of the writers-contemporaries A. A. Bestuzhev-Marlinsky (“Trial”, 1830), A. S. Pushkin (“Eugene Onegin”, 1823-1830), M. Y. Lermontov (“A Fairy Tale for Children”, 1839–1841, published in 1842), Honoré de Balzac (“A Daughter of Eve”, 1838).
Key words: E. P. Rostopchina; myth of the lapse from virtue; Eve; Adam; Serpent; apple; motif structure; motifs of curiosity, temptation, imprisonment, illness and death; individual author’s myth
