Abstract: The research deals with the category of evocation, viewed on as a phenomenon of interdiscourse – a linguosociocultural space, formed on the borderline between two interacting discourses: fiction and law. The aim of the paper is to study the specificity of the functioning of the category of evocation reflected in literary legal and judicial texts. It should be mentioned that this category is realizes through certain cognitive mechanisms and special language tools the unity of which makes it possible to embody the process of evocation in the text as a representative of interdiscourse. The object of this research covers the typology and specific features of the realization of the category of discursive evocation in the novel as a form of technically reproduced reflection of legal reality. The factual material of the study includes the novel “Bleak House” by Charles Dickens which reveals the flaws in the judicial system of England in the late 18th and early 19th centuries in the epoch of the formation of bourgeois society. The famous author’s evocative communicative activity, aimed at deepening the readers’ knowledge in the field of law, results in a hybrid text. Hybridity as an immanent property of a text functioning in interdiscourse determines the integration of knowledge from heterogeneous conceptual areas, the inclusion of new narrative techniques for the novel genre, the alliance of language markers of legal discourse and units of a literary text, the mixing of elements of different speech styles, and the dialogue between different types of sociolinguistic consciousness. The appeal to different types of the recipient’s socio-linguistic consciousness, the creation of a “visual” three-dimensional image of the legal reality, the use of special linguistic means – all these are subject to the author’s evocative program – to transform the listener’s conceptual worldview. This threecomponent program (deautomatization of consciousness, construction of new images of reality, choice of pragmatically “charged” vocabulary) is realized in different types of evocation: cognitive, figurative-poetic, and linguistic proper. The sarcastic-humorous nature of the narrative in the novel is formed by the cognitive-discursive mechanism of irony-as-echo that consists in reference (mention) to a previously stated or not yet elucidated, but irrefutable fact of historical reality, presented from the point of view of the author (creator) of the novel. This mechanism of irony-as-echo is represented in a number of linguosituational means – “echo-mentions” – that generate the recipient’s creative evocative effort that results in the inclusion of new concepts (or their individual characteristics) in their conceptual worldview.
Key words: interdiscourse; hybrid text; evocative communicative activity; category of evocation; types of evocation
