Abstract: The aim of the study is to identify the main groups and functions of borrowed vocabulary as “foreign” words included in the Russian language dictionary edited by D. N. Ushakov. Attention is paid to solving the following problems: identification and description of lexico-thematic groups of foreign vocabulary presented in the dictionary, evaluation of the “foreign word” included in the dictionary from the standpoint of the history of the development of Russian vocabulary in connection with various sources of its replenishment, interpretation of the dictionary not only as a scientific work, but also as a chronicle of the development of the Russian society, etc. The object of the study is a “foreign” word in the meaning of “a word borrowed from a foreign language”. The urgency of the topic can be attributed to the fact that the law “On the State Language of the Russian Federation” No. 53-FZ of 01.06.2005 regulates the use of foreign words in Russian speech. The novelty of the research consists in the assessment of the role of foreign words in the Russian language and speech in diachrony on the lexical material of explanatory dictionaries and modern speech. This is important for establishing new trends in the development of the vocabulary of the Russian literary language, which is the most important part of the language of the Russian nation, and as the state language of the Russian Federation. The study employs the methods of lexical and stylistic analysis and observation. As a result of the study, the author have singled out seven lexico-thematic groups of foreign words, described the stylistic notes and the specific features of construction of the dictionary entry with a foreign word as the head word, and identified the lexical changes associated with the use of foreign words from the time of compilation of the explanatory dictionary to the present moment. The results of the study of the lexical material of borrowings in the dictionary are of interest from the point of view of the development of the vocabulary of the Russian language in connection with the changes in the Russian society in diachrony, which is important for the development of lexicology, the Russian literary language in general and linguoculturology.
