Abstract: The article examines elements of the Urals cultural landscape in classical and modern fiction. The scope of the study embraces the plot of “iron caravans” rafting iron ore along the Chusovaya river and the world of a Urals river as a stable topos. Literary critics note that the images of the river and iron ore rafting take up an important place in the novels of the classic of the Urals literature D. N. Mamin-Sibiryak and the modern Russian writer A. Ivanov. The study reveals the continuity of the literary tradition in the prose of the two authors and the differences associated with the changing literary context, genre and style features of the works, which relate, among other things, to the essay nature of the prose of Mamin-Sibiryak and the traditions of the historical adventure novel by Ivanov. At the same time, in the books of Ivanov (especially in the “Message: Chusovaya” and “The Gold of Revolt”) the connection with the predecessor, who had captured the iron ore rafting on the Chusovaya River as an important part of the Urals history, still remains. Special attention is paid to the plot organization and the system of characters, as well as the interrelation between the images of nature and the cultural landscape of the Urals associated with the activity of man, changing the environment and, at the same time, living in accordance with the laws of this world.
