Abstract: This paper presents different variants of dialogue with the classical text in modern literature for teenagers. Using literary classics in various authorial strategies, modern teen literature becomes an instrument for interpretation and “revival” of the canon. The works by Nina Dashevskaya, Andrey Zhvalevsky and Evgeniya Pasternak, Aleksey Oleynikov, Elena Klishina, Yuliya Yakovleva, etc. in their variety of genres (remake, graphic novel, fan fiction, sequel) provide an opportunity to answer the question of the modern status of classics and their changing functions. The situation of the reader’s crisis and the crisis of literary education explains the long-term scientific and pedagogical discussions about the revision of the classical canon and its place in the school literature curriculum. Teen literature is becoming an indicator of what is happening in modern literature: new attempts to comprehend, acquire and comment on literary classics are taking place here. Modern children’s literature and its diverse genre and thematic repertoire turn out to be for the reader not only a territory of independent interpretation, but also a space of new ways of interacting with the writer. The article presents exclusive interviews with contemporary children’s writers on the topic under investigation. The author concludes that if adult literature demonstrates trends of simplifying and parodying classical text for the general reader, the teen literature, testing different formats of playing with the texts of the school literature curriculum, is a kind of “guide” across the world of classical literature.
Key words: modern children’s literature; mass literature; classics; school canon
