Abstract: The author examines bestseller as literature phenomenon: gives a brief history of concept development, tradition and specific comprehension of this phenomenon in Western culture. The particular attention is paid to the mechanism of interaction between literature, publishing society and readers in the system of book market, considering the rating system. At the end of the article the author evaluates the present condition of Russian book market, concludes about specific features of functioning of translated mass literature, makes an attempt to characterize an average Russian reader in the context of his tastes and requirements.
