Abstract: In the article a variety of approaches to studying the personality of Gogol and Gogol's works in the 19th - the beginning of the 20th centuries are considered: metaphysical, orthodox, semiotics; splashes of interest to the great classic are characterized, attempts to open Gogol's phenomenon in a situation of polemic with Slavists of the Ukraine are analyzed.
