Riddle of a Picture Plot (Gogol's Story "Old-world Landowners")

Abstract: In the article the role of pictures in the world of Gogol's story Old-world Landowners is subject to understand. The author shows, how the key motif of illusoriness (substitution, replacement), which is characteristic for the story and all Gogol's works, is realized in selection of the described pictures. The analysis of descriptions is carried out in a context of world culture (mythology, literature, painting) and allows to show that other drama plot moves behind outwardly idyllic plot.
