Abstract: The article involved an effort to interpret Gogol's The Overcoat on the ground of patristic literary tradition: the meaning of Akaky Akakievich's passion for calligraphy writing and letter is explained by phenomenon rooted in the tradition of monk obedience; there is an ontological essence of tragic conflict of The Overcoat shown here.
