Abstract: This article deals with modern comprehension of category of state words (CSW) development in synchrony and diachrony. In scientific linguistics, higher education and school educational materials on the Russian language there are no terminological uniformity and consistency about classification of the CSW semantics-grammatical nature, as well as their stable status among other words classes. Due to free choice of author's programs and textbooks this situation has negative effect on school linguodidactics and teaching results in all-Russian scale. This article presents general history-linguistic comment on gradual lexicalization and grammaticalization of the definite structure nouns with semantics of modality, condition and attitudinality in predicate function. Special attention is paid to off-system lexical units LET (НАДО), MUST NOT (НЕЛЬЗЯ), IT IS A PITY (ЖАЛЬ). History-linguistic researches and lexicography demonstrate that CSW forming resulted from long-term systematic historical changes in the process of nouns, pronouns, and verbs interaction. Centuries-old evolution process is still active now, forming the unique east-Slavic (mainly Russian!) language phenomenon — CSW. The article is addressed to teachers of philologists to-be.
