Abstract: On the basis of A. P. Platonov's works of the early 1920s the problems of space philosophy related to the pilgrimage idea that is central for ideological and aesthetic writer system are considered in the article. The originality of the topographical «water/river» chronotope as an image symbol in world building and semantic aspects of Volga image in his publicistic and poetic texts are studied. The article follows how the river/water chronotope is expressed in the text, how water-related meanings are reconstructed through the existence in hero's consciousness and spatial images act as substances in his internal life. It is proved that the writer is not so interested in the external side of events as in historical shifts in the outlook of heroes; it is also noted that the author pays attention to the national character and the free personality, whose existence brings its form and its contents in life.
