Abstract: The degradation of the Russian literary language, which is noted by many members of today's Russian intelligentsia, is without doubt connected with the abundance of slang in colloquial speech and in mass media texts, as well as with little attention paid to the development of oral speech of pupils at school. Tolerance of the norms of the literary language to colloquial slang and vulgar words is combined with neglect of the dialect vocabulary, which is declared to be the language spoken by illiterate farmer. The school curriculum in the Russian language devotes only one hour in the 6th grade to the study of dialectal words, besides the presentation of the material is inexpressive and not quite accurate. Meanwhile, it is the dialect words that used to be source for vocabulary enrichment for many years; today they make part of the cultural heritage and serve as an example of expressiveness and figurativeness of Russian words. The paper proposes a plan of lesson devoted to the study of dialectal words using «the Dictionary of Russian dialects of the Middle Urals» and provides recommendations on organization of extracurricular work with the dialect dictionary.
