Abstract: The lesson of extracurricular reading based on the story from the collection of A. Zhvalevsky and E. Pasternak is focused on the formation of the student's self-concept. The lesson is built on the basis of semantic reading strategies («orientation of anticipation», «silent reading with questions»), it uses different forms of work — collective, group, individual. The work with the story is focused on the analysis of the system of characters, external and internal conflicts and cross-cutting image. The principle of actualization of successive links with the works of classical literature is determinative when choosing a book for extracurricular reading in the 6th grade. This gives pupils the opportunity to recall and rethink the content of the books previously read, to understand the relevance of the problems raised by the writers of different eras, as well as the value of the ideas they affirm. It is modern children's literature that is a powerful means of spiritual development of the personality, feeding the mind and imagination of the child, revealing to him new worlds, images and patterns of behavior that can be realized in modern society.
