Abstract: The article argues that it is necessary to take into account the current situation when teaching Russian as a foreign language; attention should be paid to: migration processes, intercultural communication, development of information and communication technologies, visualization of culture and social life, etc. It is stated that there should be rational balance of traditional and modern methods of teaching Russian as a foreign language, the emphasis should be laid on communicative approach aimed at communication skills development and formation of speech competence in different communicative situations. The principle of pragmatic relevance of teaching is discusses in detail. This principle is based on suitability of teaching aids to psycho-physiological characteristics, social and professional needs of the students. In this context, the article argues the importance of activation of Russian as a foreign language teacher’s work aimed at development of textbooks and teaching materials to be used in a definite region, in other words, textbooks that have the necessary information for certain students — they should not only contain linguistic information, but also give the necessary geographic and professional information and describe certain phenomena relevant for the student. Such approach promotes the pragmatic component of teaching Russian as a foreign language and stimulates the development of interdisciplinary relations.
