Abstract: The aim of this article is to study the linguistic representation of the “pain” concept by means of various figures of speech on the material of Russian translations of the poem “Address to the Toothache” by Robert Burns performed by S. Ya. Marshak, E. D. Feldman, S. Sapozhnikov, A. Bulynko and G. Devyatkina. The urgency of this study is demonstrated by the attention of linguo-conceptologists to the issue of linguistic conceptualization and verbalization of the phenomenon of pain. The novelty of this is seen from the fact that the “pain” concept, expressed with the help of figures of speech in Russian translations of the poem “Address to the Toothache” by Robert Burns, has not become an object of special linguistic analysis yet. The author of the article conducts a deep analysis of the notional component of the concept “pain” and provides a detailed description of the explication of the figurative and axiological components of the “pain” concept in the texts of Russian translations. It is concluded that metaphor (including personification), hyperbole, antithesis and epithets as tools of secondary/indirect nomination are the dominant means of verbalization of the concept of “pain” in the texts of Russian translations of the poem “Address to the Toothache” by Robert Burns of the above mentioned authors. To achieve the aims of the research, the author turned to such linguistic methods as conceptual analysis, distributive method, and analysis of dictionary definitions. The results of the study can be used for further study of linguistic conceptualization and verbalization of pain on the basis of Russian translations of works of other foreign writers. The practical value of this work lies in the possibility to implement its results in courses of linguistics, stylistics and text interpretation, in special courses of linguopoetics and linguoconceptology.
