Abstract: Any culture finds its expression in certain key words. The conditions for a word to become a key word include the following: it should be commonly and frequently used and included in phraseological units, proverbs and sayings. The author of the study poses a hypothesis that the words expressing “openness” can be considered as key words of culture or even as a cultural universals. Studying “openness” as a cultural phenomenon, the author analyzes French phraseological units, including the words ouvrir, ouvert, ouverture, in order to discover the cultural meanings and connotations associated in French with this category. The article presents the results of a study consisting of three stages: analysis of the etymology of the verb ouvrir and its derivatives, analysis of the combinability of the lexemes under study in phraseological units and identification of the personal traits expressed by French phraseological units containing these lexemes. It is shown that French phraseological units expressing openness are anthropocentric. Therefore, words denoting parts of the body, human intellectual abilities, houses and other objects created by man make up an integral part of such units. Being a complex formation, openness can be social (communicative), cognitive, spiritual (psychological) and flexible. The French phraseological units under analysis reflect all four aspects of openness; however, the social and the cognitive aspects are expressed more saliently and in more detail. These two aspects of openness seem to be most valuable for the French collective consciousness. The smallest number of phraseological units represents inner (spiritual) openness. Openness as a cultural and psychological phenomenon is presented positively by the French people's consciousness. Most of the phraseological units that include the verb ouvrir and its derivatives have a positive connotation. The results obtained allow outlining the study of the linguo-cultural category of openness in a comparative aspect as one of the possible prospects.
Key words: Linguo-cultural category; openness; French phraseological units; culture-loaded words; semantics
