Abstract: The monograph review describes the object of the study: the poetics of the visual and the structure and the logic of the monograph. The “poetics of the visual”, in contrast to the “painting through words”, or “pictoriality”, entails the viewpoint of the “beholder” (the character, author, or reader). The monograph, based on the material of the 19th century works of fiction, analyzes such components of the material world of the work as ekphrasis, portrait, costume, and food/still life. The advantage of the monograph consists in the discovery of connection between the “poetics of the visual” and the narratology. The reviewer makes a conclusion about the productivity of the cultural-semiotic approach to the portrayal of the details of the appearance and the object world of the characters.
Key words: pictoriality in literature; ekphrasis; artistic detail; portrait; archetype; cultural semiotics
