Abstract: The research paper presents a scientific and critical view on the modern lexicographic tradition of compiling experimental dictionaries; in particular, it analyzes the book by V. M. Mokienko and K. P. Sidorenko “Popular Expressions of Ilya Ilf and Evgenii Petrov’s Dilogy (“The Twelve Chairs” and “The Golden Calf”)”. The authors of this publication have collected and commented on a set of stable expressions, quotations, literary images, and aphoristic expressions used in the texts of the famous novels. The urgency of this source of material can be attributed to the high citation index of the dilogy texts and the active use of the authored intertext in modern journalism and in the Internet space of the 21st century. It is stated that Mokienko and Sidorenko have made a successful attempt to compile a dictionary of the popular phrases in the heritage of the great Soviet satirists. The review notes that using the heuristic potential of the descriptive method, the scholars have singled out and analyzed about one thousand original text units of varying degrees of use, expressiveness, structure and functional status. As a merit of the book, it is indicated that the dictionary contains article-by-article comments of historical, cultural and linguistic nature and references to real facts that allow the reader to use artistic allusions as elements of real communication. The material of the dictionary confirms the authors’ thesis that the texts by Ilf and Petrov have not yet lost their urgency and originality in the use of linguistic means. Their reproduction in modern discourse is a vivid sign of blogging culture, based on paradoxes, subtle humor and erudition. The article presents a dispute with the authors of the dictionary about the criteria for the selection of popular expressions and the ways of commenting on them. The examples taken from journalistic texts, fiction, and scientific literature of recent years indicate that the large flow of quotations and their intertext derivatives can be explained by an internal powerful associative potential that perfectly fits into the linguistic worldview of the Russian-speaking person of the 21st century.
