Abstract: The article presents the first pages of the history of the Moscow Dialectological Commission, the unofficial activity of which began in 1901 with the creation of the Moscow circle for the study of the Russian language, founded by A. D. Grigoriev and N. N. Durnovo with the support of F. E. Korsh and A. A. Shakhmatov. D. N. Ushakov played a significant role in the activities of the circle, and subsequently in the work of the Moscow Dialectological Commission. One of the aims of the article is to publish the archival materials from the funds of the St. Petersburg branch of the Archive of the Russian Academy of Sciences, which allow tracing the progress of the Commission creation in 1904 from this linguistic circle. Based on the archival documents introduced into scientific circulation for the first time, the article provides information about the Moscow circle for studying the Russian language: about its membership; about the interaction with the II Department of the Russian Language and Literature of the Imperial Academy of Scienc-es; about the role of academician Shakhmatov in the creation of the MDC; about the beginning of work on compiling a dialectological map of the Russian language. The article contains information about the materials expected to be included in the map and the way the Commission’s library collection was started. The materials presented in the article fill the gap in the history of the creation of the Moscow Dialectological Commission and show the distance the scholars were to pass from the creation of a private circle to the official recognition of their activity by the Academy of Sciences. While writing the article, the author uses materials related to the activity of the Moscow Dialectological Commission, stored in the St. Petersburg branch of the RAS Archive. The article publishes for the first time the minutes of the first meeting of the circle about the beginning of its work, as well as the minutes of the last thirtieth meeting, at which the question of official recognition of the circle was discussed, as a result of which the members of the circle decided to agree with its transformation into a commission. The article also publishes the minutes of the first meeting of the Commission for the first time. The discussions and considerations related to this period of the Commission history are restored on the basis of archival data. The archival materials presented in the article are not only a valuable source of information about the history of Russian linguistics, but also provide evidence about the formation of this linguistic center and the atmosphere and the context in which it took place.
