Abstract: The article for the first time publishes and comments on the letters of D. N. Ushakov to Academician V. M. Istrin, which highlight important philological problems: a meeting of the Faculty of History and Philology of Moscow University dedicated to the memory of Academician A. A. Shakhmatov (1921); the activities of the Moscow Dialectological Commission (1921–1929); work on the preparation of a project to compile an explanatory dictionary of the Russian language (1920s), which was not completed. The letters also contain rare data about the events of those years, for example, what reports about Shakhmatov were delivered; about the archival research of Ushakov on the biography of the academician; about the role of Shakhmatov in the organization of the Dialectological Atlas of the Russian language; in the letter dated March 28, 1925, Ushakov informs Istrin about the found part of the manuscript of the “Etymological Dictionary of the Russian language” by A. G. Preobrazhensky. The factual basis of these materials is of great interest, showing how the work on the publication of the “Proceedings of the Moscow Dialectological Commission” took place in the difficult conditions of Soviet reality. The well-known Slavists-organizers and participants of scientific projects of that time are mentioned: A. A. Buslaev, I. G. Golanov, A. M. Peshkovsky, A. M. Selishchev, etc. The published facts testify to close contacts between the leadership of the Academy of Sciences with the Moscow group headed by Ushakov. In conclusion, the article presents two letters by E. S. Istrina sent to Ushakov in 1934. They inform about the work on the orthographic dictionary of the Russian language. The last letter mentions the first volume of the “Explanatory Dictionary of the Russian Language” edited by Ushakov, which was being prepared for publication. The published texts fill a gap in the historiography of science. They can be used to study the Russian linguistics of the pre-war period and linguopersonology.
