Abstract: The aim of the study is to analyze the “short novella” by M. Tarkovsky “Ocean Hotel” (2001), to identify the specific features of the poetological and structural constructions of the text, and to consider the system of images of characters and, in particular, the image of the protagonist Pavel, the reflecting ego-personage of the author. The main research methods include the structural-semantic, poetological and intertextual analyses, which together make it possible to actualize the processes of creating a literary text and accentuate the problem-thematic nodes of the novella. As a result of the work, the study has established the plot and compositional features of the novella “Ocean Hotel” (four-part division of 3+1, combination of synchrony and diachrony, exploi-tation of “conspiracy” techniques), has identified the author’s target intentions while creating the image of the protagonist (type of a strong Siberian man) and has discovered intra-textual discrepancies between the author’s intentions and their explication in the text (the strength and weakness of the character of the main character and the realization of the character-actor through the triad “thought – intention – action”). The study shows that the archetypal image-concept “road” is chosen by the author as a condition for testing the character and his self-realization outside the areas of taiga and hunting. It has been established that the image of Tar-kovsky’s ego-personage did not receive integrity and completeness, and the literary technique turned out to be dominant. In the course of the analysis, the study has discovered the points of interaction of the short novella under consideration with Tarkovsky’s intertextual pretexts – the works of A. Solzhenitsyn, V. Shukshin, V. Rasputin, A. Vampilov, V. Kunin, etc.
Key words: M. Tarkovsky; “Ocean Hotel”; composition; plot; story; characterization of the ego-personage; artistic intention and creative realization.
