Abstract: At present, pedagogues attach great importance to the kinds of educational activity of schoolchildren. It has been found that the textbook on a subject is the most important means of organizing this activity. In this regard, the theoretical foundation and creation of a new generation textbook is an urgent problem of modern methods of teaching the Russian language. It is necessary to formulate the requirements for its content and structure taking into account the achievements that were obtained in the previous periods of development of psycho-pedagogical and methodological science and modern scientific and practical realities. The article considers the issues of the structure and content of the Russian language textbook in the historical aspect and analyzes the current school textbooks of Russian, notes the role of the textbook in solving cognitive, communicative, moral and aesthetic problems, and highlights the significance of the textbook as an “advanced tool for organizing training”. The author provides a theoretical substantiation of the need to create a modern Russian language textbook of a new generation. Drawing on the works on the theory and history of textbook studies, the article presents the main principles reflecting the structure and content of a modern school textbook of the Russian language, which can make it possible to create a new generation textbook that would meet the requirements of the Federal State Educational Standard, aimed at the learning outcomes and the formation of a functionally literate school-leaver.
