Abstract: One of the problems of psycholinguistic description of ideophones consists in the search for better ways to explore the “pure” phonetic meanings of ideophones in their isolation from the lexical semantics of the word. The author suggests two ways to solve this problem: on the one hand, one can adapt the existing experimental methods to this end, on the other hand, the researcher can use “special” linguistic material (such as occasional or dialectal words, synonymous series, etc.), which allows respondents to focus on the sound composition of the words. The article deals with a psycholinguistic study developed and conducted taking into account this approach: it demonstrates the possibility of using an experiment employing the cluster analysis method based on dialectal lexical units, the meanings of which are not known to respondents, and phonetic occasionalisms. In the process of analyzing experimental data, the author outlines the strategies for clustering ideophones at each stage (including reliance on the assumed denotative content of language units, emotional-expressive-evaluative connotations, visual or auditory associations, formal (structural) similarity or difference of the sound composition of the words and its individual elements, grammatical features, graphical appearance, etc.), and identifies the main parameters of phonosemantic expressiveness of stimuli (bilabial consonants as a means of creating an associative representation of the rounded shape of an object; sound reiteration, back-lingual consonants and “tense” vowel “s” as carriers of negative evaluative connotations, etc.). As a result of this experiment, a conclusion was made about the high productivity of using the cluster analysis method to study the phonosemantic expressiveness of a word in isolation from its lexical meaning. The materials can be used in the process of developing and conducting university classes in stylistics, psycholinguistics, phonosemantics, and the modern Russian literary language.
