Abstract: Recently, studies of various aspects of such a linguistic phenomenon as discursive marker have become increasingly active. However, the definition of this phenomenon still raises many questions in linguistic circles. This article focuses on a critical analysis and synthesis of the views of American and European scholars on discursive markers in order to determine their linguistic status. The article brings up the problem of terminological nomination of the phenomenon under study. In addition, the authors make an attempt to describe and analyze several interpretations of discursive markers from the standpoint of such linguistic approaches as functional, semantic, cognitive, pragmatic, and sociolinguistic, as well as from the point of view of the theory of argumentation. As a result of the analysis, it has been found that the choice of the term is not always determined by the approach to the study of discursive markers. The choice of terminological nomination may be associated with the aspect and/or functions of this phenomenon. In addition, the study has revealed the similarities and differences in the typology and classification of discursive markers. This allowed the authors to conclude that the classification of discursive markers is more often than not based on formal and/or functional principles. The question of the linguistic status of discursive markers also remains open. To date, there is no consensus on whether this unit is a class or a language category.
