Abstract: An ambivalent realization of the idea of a birthplace in the feminine images is considered in the article. The image of the Mother-Motherland, calling for sacrifice, is updated during crisis periods of the history. On the contrary, the periods of state construction make statues of "antique" character highly demanded; the latter emphasize the grandiosity of the projects of national revival. The author explores works of the modernist writers and traces the historical prospective to the end of the XX century.
