Abstract: In accordance with universal socio-cultural ideas about the family, the roles of older relatives are determined by the traditional ideas of the Russian person about the transfer of values to future generations. The article analyzes some works of modern literature for children and adolescents, the system of images of which actualizes the most intricate complex of relationships between three generations: grandmother/grandfather – parents – grandson/granddaughter. The study considers what features of the characters are actualized and contrasted by the authors when creating images of older relatives and what stereotypical male and female qualities are represented in the images of an old man/old women. The investigation of the text from the standpoint of receptive aesthetics, which put the reader at the forefront, allowed the analysis of conceptually significant images of grandparents to be carried out on the basis of a comparison of “everyday” and “literary” representations. Reactions to the words-stimuli grandmother, grandfather, forming an extensive associative field in native speakers of the Russian language, were distributed by semantic zones (portrait; role in the family), according to which the analysis of ways of representing images of grandparents in modern children’s and adolescents’ literature was carried out. As a result of the analysis, it was revealed that gender oppositions are often neutralized, since the indication of the special role of grandparents in the family associated with the archetypal role (wise old man/old woman) comes to the fore: thanks to them, children get acquainted with culture and history, including families and their kind, and they ask their grandmother (less often grandfather) for answers to difficult life questions. No significant transformation of the image of grandmother/grandfather in comparison with the traditional representations of a Russian person has been revealed in children’s and adolescents’ literature, but, of course, the literature clearly postulates the main mission of older relatives – to be keepers of family values and translators of “cultural memory”. In addition, the image of the grandfather is associated with the representation of stereotypical ideas about male heroism, courage, and readiness to protect his family.
Key words: Archetypes; grandmothers; grandfathers; the Wise Old Man archetype; the Wise Old Woman archetype
