Abstract: The article analyzes the contribution of D. N. Ushakov to the formation and development of Russian phraseography. The object of the study covers the principles of choosing and presentation of super-word (phraseo-logical) units in the “Explanatory Dictionary of the Russian Language”. The research aim is to establish the origins and the essence of Ushakov’s phraseographic conception that influenced the development of Russian phraseography. While comparing Ushakov’s dictionary with the explanatory dictionaries published before and the phraseological dictionaries of the second half of the 20th – early 21st centuries, the author employs the descriptive and comparative-historical methods and the methods of component analysis and statistical calcu-lations. The conception of linguistic characterization of phraseologisms was created by Ushakov taking into account the experience of description of phraseological units in academic dictionaries of the 18th–19th centu-ries and the phraseological dictionary by M. I. Mikhelson. The main principles of Ushakov’s conception are the following: 1) the phraseological corpus is inextricably linked with the vocabulary; 2) proper understanding of the phraseological system can be obtained by adhering to a broad view of the object of phraseology; 3) super-word (phraseological) units of any semantics characterized by reproducibility, stability of component composi-tion, grammatical structure and stability of meaning are elements of the language system; 4) while selecting units for explanatory dictionaries, it is necessary to take into account all active layers of the national language; 5) clear definitions, normativity, scientific reliability, linguistic notes, historico-etymological references, and salient structuring of dictionary entries grant the dictionary a worthy place in the national culture. These prin-ciples have been inherited by the modern authors of explanatory dictionaries similar to Ushakov`s master-piece and by phraseographers. The development of phraseography is associated not only with the description of super-word (phraseological) units by lexicographers, but also with the development of phraseology as a linguistic discipline. The phraseological dictionary by A. I. Molotkov and the dictionary of proverbs and sayings by V. P. Zhukov became the forerunners of the new phraseographic approach proper. In 1967 they laid the foundation for the phraseographic boom of the second half of the 20th – early 21st centuries when Ushakov’s conception was realized not only in general phraseological dictionaries, but also in dictionaries specializing in the description of super-word (phraseological) units of a certain type.
