Abstract: The article describes the specific features of teaching the topic “Qualitative reduction of the vowel [a] after soft consonants” as part of the Russian language correction course at the main stage of training. The aim of the study is to identify effective teaching methods that could be used to correct and/or automate the skills of reducing vowels after soft consonants in the Russian speech of Chinese students. The authors present a system of exercises targeted at foreign students who have mastered the program of the preparatory faculty or the pre-university stage of learning Russian outside the language environment, as a result of which they have a marked foreign accent. It is noted that not only incorrect pronunciation of individual sounds, but also lack of qualitative reduction of vowels, both after hard and soft consonants, forms a foreign-language accent in Russian speech, inappropriate for a future linguist, philologist or specialist in the field of intercultural communication. The article presents the peculiarities of the correction course of Russian phonetics, outlines the similarities and differences between the correction and introductory pronunciation courses, and describes their goals, objectives, techniques and methods. The paper analyzes modern educational and teaching aids for correction courses of Russian phonetics for foreign students from the point of view of the representation of vowel reduction, singles out the advantages of these publications and identifies some shortcomings that require further linguo-methodological development. In general, the authors of this study note the inattention of the specialists in methods and practicing pedagogues to teaching pronunciation to foreign speakers outside the language environment. As a result of the research, a number of exercises of different types have been created with the aim of correcting and automating the skills of reducing the vowel [a] after soft consonants, and each exercise is accompanied by a brief but sufficient methods commentary and a guide for exercise completion. The practical significance of this study lies in the effective combination of the methods and techniques of teaching practical Russian phonetics. The developed system of exercises helps to eliminate foreign language accent associated with the lack of reduction and improve phonemic awareness.
